NFL Draft order 2023 | NFL Draft Orojections 2023 | NFL Mock Draft 2023 all 7 rounds
The Chicago Bears have the timer running.
Now that the early window of Week 18 games has passed, the opportunity to obtain the No. 1 pick has also passed. With a loss, the Bears ended their season, securing the first overall pick in the draught and igniting three months of speculation. Will the Bears maintain their top-pick status? Will the pick be exchanged for a haul? Do they plan to acquire a quarterback?
The Texans, who ended their regular season with a rare victory, are ranked second. Houston had been in the running for the No. 1 pick for the majority of the season, but Lovie Smith and Davis Mills led the Texans to an incredible Week 18 victory over the Colts, stealing the Bears' No. 2 pick and possibly keeping them out of the running for a franchise-altering quarterback in Bryce Young.
The next few months will be interesting to watch. As April 27 gets closer and closer on the calendar, expect haggling.
Why the Bears require the first selection in the NFL Draft in 2023
Even though the Bears have had a dismal season overall, Justin Fields' growth as a quarterback makes this one worth celebrating. Fields became a superstar in his second season after ending the season with the second-most rushing yards by an NFL quarterback ever while also displaying growth as a passer.
The Bears will almost certainly try to trade down if they end up with the top pick. That would make it possible for any team in the league to step forward and select Young if they think he should be taken first overall. With so many teams in the league in need of a quarterback, the Bears may receive a huge harvest of picks and potentially even players in exchange for the first pick.
The Bears shouldn't be aiming too low in their trade negotiations. Chicago is in desperate need of defensive line assistance. The best two defensive players available are Alabama edge rusher Will Anderson and Georgia defensive lineman Jalen Carter, and both would significantly help Chicago. If Carter and Anderson are not available after a trade down, the Bears may also target an offensive lineman or wide receiver.
Who might want to move up to No. 1? If Chicago wins the first pick, a number of teams, including the Texans, Colts, Titans, Falcons, Raiders, and Panthers, might be willing to trade for it.
